Why Have a Compliance Program?
One of the charges of DePaul University's Office of Institutional Compliance is ensuring that university funds are used appropriately. Instances of misconduct or fraud can cause a major impact on a university's finances, resources and reputation. Below are examples of how misused resources cost other institutions:
- The University of Chicago paid $650,000 for research fraud and abuse
- A budget manager at Northwestern University was sentenced to nine years in prison for embezzling more than $900,000 in university funds over a seven-year period
- Northwestern University paid $5.5 million for inaccurate grant time and effort reporting
- New York University was fined $15 million for inflated research grant costs
- Thomas Jefferson University returned $12 million for over-billing charges of unallowable items
- University of Texas paid $12 million for the underpayment of royalties
- Yale University paid $5.6 million for medical over-billing
- The University of South Florida returned $4 million in federal grant money for inappropriately spending research funds and failing to properly record purchases
- Stanford University was fined $1.2 million for inflated research overhead costs
- Iowa State University misspent a gift and was forced to repay more than $205,000 to cover the mismanagement
